How to Declutter Your Wardrobe

It seems like minimalism is a word that you see a lot these days. We live in such a complicated world, and I think that we're all striving to be a little more simple in our day-to-day lives. I've also always been the kind of person who is stressed out by clutter and I feel like I was a minimalist from birth in some ways so I'm happy that it's finally a trend. :) Anyway, we're planning a big yard sale so I took the plunge and got rid of tons of clothes as a starting point. Here are some lessons that I learned and my best tips for decluttering your wardrobe.

1. Gather Inspiration
It's hard to declutter or plan a minimal wardrobe if you don't have a clear vision of what you want in your ideal capsule wardrobe. Do you notice any trends on your Pinterest boards? As you can see on mine, my style is on the super simple side: tees, jeans, flats, basics. I also noticed as I scrolled through, that I gravitate to a lot of neutrals so I kept that in mind as I went through my stuff.

2. Purge
Take everything out of your dresser and closet first. Don't try to pick through and take out what you don't want. It works much better to take everything out and then only put back the items that you want to keep. This is a key decluttering tip that I learned that made all the difference. Once you've got everything out, start making piles: to keep, to get rid of, like it but not sure if it fits, and maybe. Then try on all of the ones that you're not sure of whether or not they fit and add them to one of the other 3 piles. Go through your maybes until you've made a decision.

3. Repeat!
I recommend going through your keep pile again and maybe even one more time! Be ruthless.

4. Neatly put away the items you're keeping.
Consider using the Kon Mari method of folding so that your items are vertical in the dresser and you can see everything that you have.

5. Sell / donate
Throw a yard sale or donate your items to Goodwill.

6. Buy quality replacements
Make a shopping list of some quality, timeless items that would complete your capsule wardrobe, and take your time finding them! Spend well, not more.
